Breakaway from Cancer Charity Rides, San Francisco and Thousand Oaks, Calif.
On February 8, 2009, Breakaway from Cancer charity bicycle rides in San Francisco and Thousand Oaks brought together 650 riders who raised more than $100,000 for the initiative’s charity partners.

BikeFest
Ventura, California
Fantastic weather served as a great backdrop for this one day cycling “lifestyle” event. Approximately 200 cycling enthusiasts participated in the events, which included a 100 km and 35 km course, as well as a Family Fun Ride, and the cycling expo attracted approximately 1,500 people.
Portions of the proceeds from this event will benefit Breakaway from Cancer.

Breakaway Miles
In honor of all cancer survivors, the final mile of four stages of the 2008 Amgen Tour of California – Santa Rosa, Sacramento, San Luis Obispo and Santa Clarita – included a Breakaway Mile featuring a local cancer survivor and an Amgen scientist. Riding with them were the survivor’s peloton of caregivers, family members and healthcare professionals who supported their win against cancer. Click here to read more about the riders.

Breakaway from Cancer Charity Ride
Palo Alto, CA
Nearly 200 cycling enthusiasts from around the Bay Area participated in a Breakaway from Cancer charity bicycle ride with professional cyclist and Amgen Tour of California stage winner George Hincapie. The ride encompassed a moderate 25-mile route throughout Palo Alto and all participants received a commemorative Amgen Breakaway from Cancer cycling jersey. Riders who achieved various fundraising levels received special incentives including a meet-and-greet with Hincapie and a road bike for the top fundraiser.

Amgen Cycling Club Presented Cycling Legend Bob Roll to Raise Funds
for Breakaway from Cancer
On February 8, the Amgen Cycling Club presented “A Night with Bob Roll.” Roll is a former professional cyclist and television commentator on the Versus cable television network and acted as Master of Ceremonies as he hosted two special guests: Jens Voigt and Stuart O’Grady from the CSC cycling team.

PedalFest 2008

In January, AEG, Amgen Tour of California and Union Bank of California hosted PedalFest to support Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer initiative. Building upon the platform established in the inaugural year of 2007, PedalFest 2008 consisted of three stationary cycling fundraising events held at Union Bank of California branches in San Francisco (January 16), Solvang (January 26), and Los Angeles (January 29).

Breakaway From Cancer Initiative Reaches Record Crowds at 2007 Amgen Tour of California
On Sunday, February 25, as Stage 7, the final stage of the 2007 Amgen Tour of California rolled in to Long Beach, it was clear that the crowds of spectators exceeded expectations, breaking the record attendance of 1.3 million for the 2006 Amgen Tour and setting a new record, nearly 1.6 million, as largest single sporting event in California history. PedalFest 2007
PedalFest 2007 - an Amgen Tour of California pre-event - was a unique, stationary cycling fundraiser in which miles pedaled earned matched dollars. For a $5 minimum donation, individuals were invited to ride a stationary bike at select Union Bank branches for five minutes, and Union Bank of California, AEG and the Amgen Tour of California each donated $1 for every mile ridden to support the Breakaway from CancerTM initiative. Breakaway from Cancer Charity Rides
Before the professional cyclists hit the road for the second Amgen Tour of California in February, cycling enthusiasts around the country had the opportunity to participate in the Breakaway from Cancer™ charity rides in Washington D.C. (November 12), San Francisco (December 3) and Thousand Oaks (February 11). Each ride encompassed a moderate 25-mile course and was open to all levels of experienced riders.
